Wayfaring Stranger

I am a poor wayfaring stranger
While journeying through this world of woe;
And there’s no sickness, toil nor danger
In that bright land to which I go.

I’m going there to see my Father,
I’m going there no more to roam;
I’m only go-going over Jordan,
I’m only go-going over home.

I know dark clouds will gather ‘round me,
I know my way is rough and steep;
And beautiful fields lie just before me,
Where God’s redeemed there vigils keep.

I’m going there to see my Father,
I’m going there no more to roam;
I’m only go-going over Jordan,
I’m only go-going over home.

<instrumental>

I’m going there to see my mother,
I’m going there no more to roam;
I’m only go-going over Jordan,
I’m only go-going over home.

I want to wear that crown of glory,
When I get home to that good land;
Well I want to shout salvation’s story,
In concert with ohh the blood-washed band,

I’m going there to see my Saviour,
I’m going there no more to roam;
I’m only go-going over Jordan,
I’m only go-going over home.

Well I’m only go-going over home.
Yeah only go-going over home.

How Will I Explain About You?

Bill Monroe

You left me, my darling to travel alone
My heart is so lonely and blue
When friends ask about you why you’re not around
How will I explain about you?

How will I explain about you?
They know I’ve been faithful and true
So when they start asking why you’re not around
How will I explain about you?

They saw us together for such a long time
They knew that I loved you so true
But now that you’ve gone and I’m left all alone
How will I explain about you?

How will I explain about you?
I can’t let them know that we’re through
They wouldn’t believe it could ever be true
How will I explain about you?

If ever you were lonely and wish to return
Remember I’m waiting for you
But if I must travel that pathway alone
How will I explain about you?

How will I explain about you?
I’m leaving it all up to you
And if you insist that our pathways must part
How will I explain about you?

The First Whippoorwill

Springtime is near my darling
You say that you are going away
My heart will be with you my darling
And I’m counting now the days

I know that soon I’ll have to travel
I know I’m over the hill
I feel so all alone my darling said she’d be gone
When I heard that first whippoorwill

The flowers are blooming little darling
With the budding of the trees
I hear the night birds a crying
I know that they are warning me

Our love was planted little darling
Just like the farmer plants his grain
But there will never be a harvest
On the hills the whippoorwills now sing

Deep River Blues

Artist: Watson Doc
Song: Deep River Blues
Album: Trouble in Mind

Let it rain, let it pour,
Let it rain a whole lot more,
‘Cause I got them deep river blues.
Let the rain drive right on,
Let the waves sweep along,
‘Cause I got them deep river blues.

My old gal’s a good old pal,
And she looks like a water fowl,
When I get them deep river blues.
Ain’t no one to cry for me,
And the fish all go out on a spree
When I get them deep river blues.

Give me back my old boat,
I’m gonna sail if she’ll float,
‘Cause I got them deep river blues,
I’m goin’ back to Muscle Shoals,
Times are better there I’m told,
Cause I got them deep river blues.

Let it rain, let it pour,
Let it rain a whole lot more,
‘Cause I got them deep river blues,
Let the rain drive right on,
Let the waves sweep along,
‘Cause I got them deep river blues.

If my boat sinks with me.
I’ll go down, don’t you see,
‘Cause I got them deep river blues,
Now I’m gonna say goodbye,
And if I sink, just let me die,
‘Cause I got them deep river blues.

Let it rain, let it pour,
Let it rain a whole lot more,
‘Cause I got them deep river blues,
Let the rain drive right on,
Let the waves sweep along,
‘Cause I got them deep river blues

Stacker Lee

Police officer
How can it be?
You can arrest everybody
But cruel Stagger Lee
That bad man
Oh cruel Stagger Lee

Billy DeLyon told Stagger Lee
Please don’t take my life
I got two little babes
And a darling, loving wife
That bad man
Oh cruel Stagger Lee

What do I care about your two little babes
And a darling loving wife?
You done stole my Stetson hat
I’m bound to take your life
That bad man
Oh cruel Stagger Lee

Boom boom, boom boom
Went a fourty-four
Well when I spied Billy DeLyon
He’s lying down on the floor
That bad man
Oh cruel Stagger Lee

Gentlemens of the jury
What you think of that?
Stagger Lee killed Billy DeLyon
‘Bout a five dollar Stetson hat.
That bad man
Oh cruel Stagger Lee

Standing on the gallows
Head way up high,
At twelve o’clock, they killed him
We was all glad to see him die
That bad man
Oh cruel Stagger Lee

Blue Yodel No. 4

She’s long she’s tall, she six feet from the ground
She’s long she’s tall, she six feet from the ground
She tailor made, lord she ain’t no hand me down
Oh-di-lay-ee-ay, di-lay-dee-oh, de-lay-ee

She got eyes like diamonds, lord her teeth shine just the same
She got eyes like diamonds and her teeth shine just the same
She got sweet ruby lips, and a hair like a horse’s mane
Oh-di-lay-ee-ay, di-lay-dee-oh, de-lay-ee

Every time I see you mama, you’re always on the street
Every time I see you mama, you’re always on the street
You hang out on the corner, like a police on his beat
Oh-di-lay-ee-ay, di-lay-dee-oh, de-lay-ee

Every time I need you mama, lord I always find you’re gone
Every time I need you mama, lord I always find you’re gone
Listen hear sweet mama, I’m gonna put your air brakes on
Oh-di-lay-ee-ay, di-lay-dee-oh, de-lay-ee

Country Boy Rock And Roll

Author: Don Reno

(D) You can tell I’m from the country
see I’m from out of town
But I’m beginning to catch on
I’m letting my hair down

(D) I’ve been a’ rocking
I’ve been (G) a’ rollin’
(D) I guess to some folks I look foolish
just (A) let it (G)make (A)a fool out of (D) me

I have worked in fields of cotton
I have worked in fields of corn
But I’ve seen nothing like it
since the day that I was born

I walked in a crowded dance hall
and I didn’t know a soul
Some hillbillies started picking
everybody rocked and rolled

I have spent all the egg money
corn and cotton I have sold
I’ll mortgage my old homestead
stay in town to rock and roll

Spike Driver Blues

Spike Driver Blues

Mississippi John Hurt

( John’s version of John Henry. This also was on

The American Anthology of Folk Music )

Well John Henry, he had a little woman, named Polly Anne.

When John Henry got sick and couldn’t work, she drove like a man.

John Henry was a steel drivin’ boy, but he went down.

Its a long way to East Colorado, baby that’s my home.

John Henry, he left his hammer, lyin’ side the road.

John Henry, he left his hammer, painted in red.

Ain’t noone’s hammer on this whole mountain, rings like mine.

Take this hammer and carry it to my captin, tell him I’m gone.

Argyle 2008 Mandolin Workshops

Here are the mandolin workshops of Ronnie McCoury and Jesse Cobb (of the Infamous Stringdusters) from the 2008 Argyle Bluegrass Festival.

I really appreciate Ronnie and Jesse for letting me record the workshops. I think it is a wonderful thing that they took the time to give the workshops, and both of them did a very good job.

There are a couple of interesting notes to these workshops. First is the contrast in philosophy between these two musicians. They have almost opposite opinions on everything from holding the pick, how to practice, the usefulness of TAB, and more.

In Ronnie’s workshop, he goes into great detail about how he came to his Lloyd Loar mandolin. He talks about what makes the Loar sound special, how he improvises onstage, and what make the McCoury band’s sound different. Ronnie also talks about Monroe’s playing style and picks some cool tunes on his Loar.

Jesse Cobb gave a great workshop also. Jesse talks about different chord voicings and rhythms that he likes to use. Jesse also dropped a hot opinion about the chop style of many modern bluegrass mandolin players. He talks about his struggles in Nashville and how he keeps loose on stage.
